Children fascinate, delight, and challenge me. I am drawn to them like a magnet. I am especially attracted to the ones who are having invisible trouble. Almost no one would hesitate to risk all to rescue a child in obvious danger. Few people can see that the children with whom I work are in grave danger – danger of social, emotional, relational, academic and vocational failure. All. Their. Life. They are at great risk for drug abuse, crime, accidents, prolonged dependence on parents, divorce, unemployment, under-employment, and the list goes on. Their personal struggles become unresolved community issues. These children have become my life’s work.
My work with them is not a job, it is a calling. The work is both difficult and joyous. Difficult because of the intensity of the learning exchanges and joyous because the mediated learning experience offered by NILD Educational Therapists absolutely works! I remember well the years when I recognized the needs of these students and despaired not knowing how to help them. Now no words are adequate to describe the heady experience of enticing a discouraged, defeated youngster to a place of confidence and competence.
After more than twenty years of success with my students I am equally delighted to be teaching others to take up this work. It seems to be the best way to reach more children and…adult learners are exciting students too!
